SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to Governor Newsom signing AB 825, AB 1207, SB 237, SB 254, and SB 352.

Statement from Melissa Romero, Policy Advocacy Director, California Environmental Voters:

“California’s latest climate package reflects both progress and unfinished business. While the cap-and-invest extension included some reforms, it fell short of the deeper changes to deliver stronger emissions reductions and community air protections. And advancing SB 237, which contains giveaways to Big Oil, undercuts the state’s ability to hold polluters accountable and protect community health.

At the same time, the Governor, Pro Tem, and Speaker showed important leadership in moving policies on grid regionalization and energy affordability across the finish line. These laws demonstrate that California can take on big, complex challenges while keeping working people at the center. Next year, our state must go further: expanding zero-emission cars, trucks, and public transportation, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, holding Big Oil accountable for the insurance affordability crisis, and making polluters pay their fair share.

As the world’s fourth largest economy, California has the responsibility and capacity to set the pace on climate action and build on this foundation with bold, equitable reforms that clean up our air, cut pollution at the source, and protect the health of every Californian.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
