OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the U.S. Senate’s move to revoke California’s long-standing authority to set stronger emission standards under the Clean Air Act, striking down the Advanced Clean Cars II rule.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“This isn’t about policy, it’s about punishment and a direct assault on public health, state rights, and our clean air and clean-energy future. Republican leadership knows California’s leadership on clean air is globally important, so instead they tried to kneecap our authority through a power grab that should have never ended up on the Senate floor in the first place.

By blocking progress on zero-emission vehicles, the Senate is keeping Americans locked into a system that prioritizes fossil fuel profits over frontline communities and public health. Rolling our waiver back isn’t just an attack on California. It undermines the eleven other states that have adopted our standards and depend on our authority to defend their own communities’ health.

We’re grateful for the unwavering leadership of Senators Padilla and Schiff, who fought hard on the floor to defend our progress. California will use every tool at our disposal — legal, legislative, political — to continue our fight for clean air and our future. This fight is far from over.”
