AB 28 – Senate Environmental Quality

Landfill Safety Act

Inspired by the Chiquita Canyon Landfill crisis, this bill aimed to prevent serious health risks caused by elevated temperature landfills. This bill would have required landfill operators to act quickly when underground temperatures exceed 131°F for over 60 days by notifying the public, submitting a corrective action plan, and coordinating with agencies to prevent toxic emissions.
