SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, the California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the signing of the United Nations agreement to protect 30 percent of Earth’s lands and oceans by 2030. The agreement, known as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, was adopted at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.

Two years ago, California became the first state in the nation to set the goal of 30×30. Prior to COP15, no national government, no member-state of the United Nations, and no party to the convention had done more than California to preserve 30% of their own or the world’s land and water by 2030. Although California was only an official observer of COP15, and the only U.S. state in participation, its leadership paved the way for the global adoption of 30×30.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“We are relieved that our global community has come to an agreement on a plan forward to protect our biodiversity. The nature crisis is deeply intertwined with the climate crisis. We are interdependent with nature and our future is connected to the protection of our ecosystems and wildlife.

While it’s inspiring that California is the global leader on 30 x30, it’s also sobering. We need our federal government and other governments to prioritize the protection of our wildlife. The quick, equitable, and sustainable implementation of this work will be most important moving forward. This is just the start of what we must accomplish in order to address the devastating impacts of climate change. Let’s get it done.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
