Sacramento, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) and the League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statements applauding Representatives John Garamendi and Mike Thompson and Senators Alex Padilla and Dianne Feinstein.

These Members of Congress – along with other members of the California delegation – today sent a letter to the President urging him to use the Antiquities Act to expand Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. This follows the President’s designation this week of his first national monument – Camp Hale in Colorado.

The expansion of Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument would safeguard Molok Luyuk, public lands that are sacred to the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and that are critically important to protect in the face of a changing climate.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:

“Molok Luyuk is a ‘must protect’ area in the midst of a changing climate. These public lands serve as a critical wildlife corridor for species such as tule elk, mountain lions and bears. It’s also home to imperiled wildlife such as bald and golden eagles and many rare plants. Protecting this habitat would help preserve critically important biodiversity.

We applaud Representatives Garamendi and Thompson and Senators Padilla and Feinstein for leading the way with this important effort.”

Statement from Leah Donahey, Federal Advocacy Campaigns Director, League of Conservation Voters:

“Expanding the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument would protect public lands that are sacred to the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and serve as a wildlife safe haven in the face of a changing climate. The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation has ties stretching back thousands of years to the area known as Molok Luyuk, which is why they support adding this area to the national monument and securing greater tribal involvement in its management. Molok Luyuk serves as a critical wildlife corridor between the existing monument and other protected areas for numerous species. This expansion would also boost the region’s outdoor recreation economy. Thank you to Representatives Garamendi and Thompson, Senators Padilla and Feinstein, and other members of the California delegation for their efforts to protect these majestic lands. We urge President Biden to continue listening and responding to local communities like the ones in this region that are seeking his help to expand Berryessa Snow Mountain.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all. Join us at and on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
