SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Legislature’s Appropriations deadline.
Statement from Shannon Olivieri Hovis, Chief Strategy Officer, California Environmental Voters:
“Today’s Appropriations Committee results show both the growing momentum behind bold climate action and the uneven political will to meet this moment. We’re energized by critical bills, like AB 1777, advancing to the Assembly Floor — creating a clear pathway to cut harmful emissions and better protect communities disproportionately impacted by poor air quality — and important bills to protect democracy, safe and affordable drinking water, and energy and insurance affordability advancing through the Senate. Still, too many important bills that would have protected our public lands and public health died in Assembly Appropriations, and failure to advance a bill to help power a cleaner, more reliable energy system (SB 1282) is concerning as Californians continue struggling under crushing utility bills and rising climate-driven costs. Today was a reminder that progress is possible, but also that too many lawmakers are not acting with the urgency Californians expect and these crises demand.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
