OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to Republicans securing a majority in the House of Representatives following Election Day.

“With the election of an anti-environmentalist trifecta, California faces an urgent responsibility to act as a counterbalance. As the fifth largest economy in the world, with 12% of Americans, and one of the largest Congressional delegations, California has the power and influence to defend against federal rollbacks and push forward on climate progress. This new political landscape poses a significant challenge to climate action, domestically and globally, and California must step up and continue to be a global leader in climate and biodiversity discussions, especially as we approach critical 2030 climate targets.
California’s size and impact come with a unique responsibility. As a significant carbon emitter, we know we’re vulnerable to global backslides if other major emitters halt climate progress. Our state will need to champion climate justice by advancing bold policies and mobilizing resources to protect our climate laws and regulations as federal safeguards are rolled back. We’re excited to send the greenest Congressional delegation in our state’s history to D.C. – our leaders in California have a duty to step up to protect our communities and serve as a beacon of climate action.
This moment demands that California lead by example, codifying protections that are under threat federally and standing firm as a powerful counterweight. ”
