OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (SB 253) making it out of the Assembly. Last year SB 260 narrowly failed to pass last year by just one vote.

The bill is co-sponsored by Ceres, the Greenlining Institute, Carbon Accountable, Sunrise Bay Area, and California Environmental Voters. Major corporations, including Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Salesforce, among others, have expressed their support of our sponsored bill.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“Speaker Robert Rivas and his leadership team have shown enormous leadership, vision, and commitment to protecting Californians now and in the future with the passage of Senate Bill 253. Up against the most powerful and resourced interests in our state, the Assembly stood strong and advanced world-changing policy, yet again proving our state’s critical role in the global fight against the climate crisis. Speaker Rivas, Majority Leader Bryan, Assemblymembers Ward, Zbur, Wicks, and Senators Wiener, Stern, Gonzalez, and many others have shown incredible resilience and tenacity to ensure California doesn’t fall back on our climate goals and values.

Today’s vote is an enormous step towards reducing pollution, addressing catastrophic fires, extreme heat, flooding, and drought. Today’s vote is real progress towards protecting our future. As the 4th largest economy in the world, California will move the world forward on climate action and accountability.

We’re grateful to our co-sponsors for fighting tirelessly with us and to all of the companies that stepped up to lead and be accountable for their pollution. We are decades behind on addressing the climate crisis, so we look forward to Senate leadership passing SB 253 in concurrence and the Governor signing this into law.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
